ABOUT
JKing Dance Company,(JKDC) based in Brooklyn, NY, was established in 2008 by Artistic Director, Joyce King. Described as ‘Dramatic Contemporary’, JKDC explores delicate topics and preconceived ideas to awaken the aesthetic and emotional influences that live within us; reflecting often upon personal experiences and events that shake the social world – creating an interplay between these events and the emotion and physicality of dance, drama, music, props and design. JKDC’s repertory tells stories- some metaphoric, some literal- intermingling human behavior with ballet, jazz, modern, acting, driven to understand life’s complexities in their simplest form. King asks, ‘What drives us? Our brain or our heart? Where life may be perceived as painful or confusing, I seek inherent joy and reason. I look to find truth’.
JKDC’s dynamic use of space and energy, evokes audiences to characterize King’s choreography as, “thought provoking, emotionally moving, and physically athletic”. Drawing upon each artist’s qualities and the interdependence of human nature, instinctively manifests into JKDC’s style, phrasing, and the essence of JKing Dance Company. View: Repertory
King’s works have been presented at 21 different events, including three self produced seasons at The Ailey Citigroup Theater ~ The Joan Weill Center for Dance in 2012- 2014, with JKDC’s upcoming 4th season performance at Ailey scheduled on May 9th, 2015. Additional upcoming performances.
